「You Okinawa 3 weeks stay , Ok ?」 と悟さんは私に言った。
これが私の沖縄でのスタート点でした。Mattの家でブラジルスタイルのバーベキューをしてミラービールを飲んでいるときに、悟さんと話をしました。 ３週間沖縄に滞在するようにと私に言った冗談は、私が実際に島に滞在した時間でした。 本来の計画では3日間滞在する予定でしたが、３つの台風からのうねり、美しい景色に惹かれ、そして地元の方から温かいおもてなしをして頂き、私は出来る限り長く滞在しました。 沖縄に長く滞在するという悟さんの言葉が現実となり、この３週間の滞在は価値のあるものとなりました。
8月末、Surflineの波情報を見ると、日本の近くの太平洋で多くのアクションが見られました。日本のほぼ全てのサーフポイントで良い波になる可能性が非常に高かったのです。このシナリオでどこに行くべきかを導くことは最大の課題であります。日本は、風、天気、タイド、スウェルの方向など、全てを理解することが本当に難しいです。パズルのようにピースが簡単には一致しません。どこへ行くかを数日間考えた後、私は沖縄に行くことにし、その3時間後に那覇空港に到着しました。しかし、台風が日本に接近している時のギリギリの決定はリスクを伴う可能性があり、沖縄へのフライトは保証されていませんでした。コロナ禍で初めての飛行機についても非常に心配していました。空港に着くと、Covid 19と台風前の天候だったので人が全くいなく、異様な雰囲気を感じました。荷物のチェックはいつもより厳しかったので、荷物の他にも様々な質問をされました。その時私は、パンデミック後の社会の変化を感じたのです。

私の沖縄での1番のコネクションはパタゴニアのアンバサダーである真木勇人です。彼とは国内外で何度かトリップをしたことがあり、沖縄トリップにおいてふさわしい人です。 勇人は深夜にもかかわらず、車で空港まで迎えに来てくれ、砂辺にある彼の家に向う途中、翌朝のうねりについてたくさん話しました。勇人はローカルの知識を活かして、今後数日間でサーフィンができる可能性と、それぞれの波の特徴を教えてくれたので、良い撮影計画を立てることができました。
そして翌朝、「The Left」の波からチェックスタートしました。見た波や景色は気に入りましたが、完璧を求めていたので、人が少ない次のスポットまでさらに数分ドライブしました。 そこに着くと、元CTサーファーのDanny Melhadoに会いました。後に、彼と他のローカルや勇人の友達とチームを組むことになったのです。その中には地元の若いプロサーファーの宮城和真、彼の親友で地元のサーファーの糸数辰徳、沖縄在住でアメリカ出身のMatthew Smuckler、地元のヒーローである仲地悟、毎回のセッションを撮影していたビデオグラファーの長田純一、 このチームと時々他のメンバーも加わり、私は沖縄のほとんどのサーフポイントを撮影することができました。頭くらいのファンウェーブからアウターリーフで重いトリプルオーバーヘッドの波まで、あらゆる種類の波がありました。

ハワイでアウターリーフの波のパワーで撮影しているような気がしましたが、ハワイとは異なる事は、沖縄ではジェットスキーのサポートが無いので、お互いを気に掛け合いながら海に入らなければなりません。 このアナログ的方法での波のハンティングは、たくさん水泳をする必要があります。なので、この様な状況での写真は、全てハンドメイドの様で特別なものになります。

沖縄に滞在している間、バディーの勇人がビッグウェーブサーフィンにどれほど一貫しているかを知ることができました。全てのセッションのセットでパドルし、波を選ぶのに辛抱強く、そして良いサーファーであり良い漁師、良い3人の父親でした。

若いサーファーの宮城和馬には驚きました。彼は小さい波からサーフィンができ、様々なエアーのアクションを行うことができますし、ビッグウェーブにも優れたスキルを持っています。間違いなく私たちが注目しなければならない男です。

伝説のサーファー仲地悟は、今でも綺麗なスタイルでサーフィンをしており、沖縄の若い世代のサーファーに大きなインスピレーションを与えています。彼は本当のヒーローだと私は思います。

また、ボディボーダーのMike B、シングルフィンサーフボードを持ったTyler Barnum、膝を負傷した状態でも大きな波にチャレンジする赤荻香名などがセッションに参加していたメンバーで、他にもたくさんの方々が加わっててくださいさいました。収まり切らなくなってしまうので、全ての方をご紹介できませんが、皆さんにはとても感謝しております。

今回の沖縄での3週間のトリップの後、沖縄に対しての見方が変わり、故郷のように感じています。それと同時に、私が世界に対する見方も変わりもした。 隣人をサポートする隣人、サーファーをサポートするサーファー、同じ海で撮影しているカメラマンがお互いに話し合って、エゴや文句無しに波に興奮したなど、沖縄にはたくさんの友情がありました。 これらの学んだことを沖縄から関東の日常に持ち帰り、活かしたいと思いました。最後も始めたときと同じように悟さんの言葉を使って…「“I love Okinawa, I born here, I live here and I will die here. Living the old surf style, surf and beer”」

The Left Okinawa
"You Okinawa 3 weeks stay, Ok?" This was my starting point in Okinawa, listening to Satoru san during a BBQ at Matt’s place eating Brazilian style barbecue and drinking Miller beer. It was a kind of joke; telling me to stay in Okinawa longer than I was pretending to stay. I was supposed to be there for 3 or 4 days but the swell of 3 different typhoons, the beautiful locations I visited, and the super warm welcome from the local community made me extend my stay there as long as possible. Satoru's words about staying longer on the island ended up becoming a reality, and it was really worth to stay for 3 weeks in Okinawa.
At the end of August, looking at the wave forecast on Surfline, I could see a lot of activity in the Pacific Ocean near the Japanese coastline. The chances to get good waves in several surf spots in Japan was really high, but to know where to go in this kind of scenario is a challenge. Japan is really tricky to understand and put all the factors together like the wind, the weather, the tide, and the swell direction, it’s not exact math, like a very difficult puzzle to solve. After thinking for a couple of days about what to do I decide to go to Okinawa and three hours later I was landing at Naha airport. Very last time decisions with a typhoon approaching Japan sometimes can be risky and getting a flight to there was not guaranteed, I was also quite concerned about my first flight during Coronavirus times. When I got to the airport, I could feel a strange atmosphere, few people transiting at Narita airport due to the Covid 19 and the pre typhoon weather. The luggage check was stricter than usual, so I was asked various questions about my bags and gear; at that time, I could feel the changes in society after the pandemic.

My number one connection in Okinawa is Patagonia's ambassador, Hayato Maki who I have done several trips together in Japan and overseas and for sure the right guy to hang around in Okinawa. Hayato picked me up at the airport late at night and during our drive to his place in Sunabe we talked a lot about the swell for the next morning. Using his local knowledge Hayato told me all the possibilities we have for surfing in the next few days and the characteristics of each wave that we would find, which helped me a lot to make a proper shooting plan.

In the morning, we started checking a wave called “The Left”, and we liked what we saw, but we were looking for perfection and totally no crowd, so we drove few more minutes to the next spot.
Once we got there we met the former CT surfer Danny Melhado and later we team up with other locals and Hayato’s friends, between them the local young pro surfer Kazuma Miyagi, his good friend and local surfer Tatsunori Itozaku, Okinawa resident Matthew Smuckler from the USA, local hero Satoru Nakachi and the videographer Jun-Ichi Osada who was always close to me filming every single session. With this team and occasionally some other members I photographed and filmed most of the surf spots in Oki, with all kinds of waves from fun head high size waves to triple overhead outer reef heavy ones.

The power of the waves in the outer reefs made me feel I was shooting in Hawaii, but different from Hawaii where we have big support from the jetski pilots, in Okinawa we were all by ourselves, taking care of each other but without any kind of support or proper safety. This genuine wave hunting somehow made every single photo a special one, kind of feel being doing it by hands and I can guarantee it was made with a lot of swimming too.

During the time I stayed there I could know how consistent my buddy Hayato Maki is on big wave surfing, paddling for the set ones in every single session being patient to choose the good ones, and for sure a good ambassador for the Okinawa lifestyle as a surfer, as a fisherman and a father of 3.

Young man Kazuma Miyagi was a sweet surprise, the boy can surf knee-high waves and do all the air show stuff but he has also a good skill for big wave surfing, definitely a guy that we have to keep an eye on.

Professional surfer Danny Melhado doing what a pro surfer does, surfing a lot with his own style, making the photographer work very easy. Danny was also the one who shared important waves information with me and Hayato putting us ahead of any other surfers in every single session.

Also, some other guys who often joined us like the bodyboarder Mike B, Tyler Barnum with his single fin surfboard, the charger Kana Akaogi surfing some big ones even with an injured knee, among others that would be impossible to write here every single name, but I remember well in my memory.
Okinawa Japan
3 weeks in Okinawa made me look at things differently, not only the way I see Okinawa now, kind of home to me after this trip, but about how I see the world. I could see a lot of friendship over there, like neighbors supporting neighbors, surfers supporting surfers, photographers shooting all together in the same line up talking to each other and all stoked about the waves with no egos or complaining. I brought these lessons from Okinawa to my everyday life back in the Kanto area and I finish this text in the same way I started it, using Satoru san words “I love Okinawa, I born here, I live here and I will die here. Living the old surf style, surf and beer”
